Focus
To educate, inspire and raise awareness of the key skills required to succeed within the Advanced Manufacturing Queensland Industry sector

In collaboration with the Queensland Government, an unprecedented initiative was launched to inspire the next generation of skilled professionals in advanced manufacturing across regional Queensland. The program reached over 1,000 students from 20+ schools, introducing them to key emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Quantum Computing (QC), Blockchain, and more. With the aim of developing crucial skills and awareness in a rapidly evolving industry, this initiative addressed the growing need for a skilled workforce to power Queensland’s future economy.

The Challenge
Regional Queensland faces unique challenges when it comes to preparing students for high-tech careers. Many schools in these areas lack access to the advanced resources needed to teach cutting-edge technologies, which creates a skills gap in industries like advanced manufacturing. In a global economy increasingly shaped by automation, AI, and digital technologies, there is a pressing need to equip students with the skills required to thrive in these sectors.

The Solution
By working closely with the Queensland Government, we designed a program that brought advanced manufacturing technologies directly to schools in regional areas. The workshops focused on hands-on learning in key areas such as AI, quantum computing, blockchain, and smart manufacturing systems. These technologies are not only transforming industries but also represent critical future career pathways for Queensland’s youth.

Key Objectives

  • Inspiring Future Leaders: The initiative aimed to spark curiosity and passion for advanced manufacturing by demonstrating the real-world applications of AI, quantum computing, and other technologies in sectors like aerospace, energy, and sustainable production.
  • Skills Pipeline Development: The workshops focused on building a talent pipeline for Queensland’s future workforce. Students gained exposure to the digital tools and processes required for advanced manufacturing, laying the foundation for career readiness.
  • Collaboration with Schools and Educators: Engaging teachers was a key aspect of the program. Educators were trained to understand the critical role that emerging technologies play in the curriculum, ensuring long-term integration of these skills in classrooms.
  • Engagement with Government Stakeholders: The Queensland Government’s involvement ensured alignment with the state’s broader economic goals, creating pathways that support local industries while addressing the skills gap in high-tech sectors.

The demand for skilled professionals in advanced manufacturing is expected to rise exponentially in the coming years. Without exposure to cutting-edge technologies in schools, many students in regional areas may be unaware of the career opportunities that exist within this sector. This initiative was designed to fill that gap by providing early engagement and hands-on experience, inspiring students to pursue education and careers in fields that are critical to Queensland’s future economy.

Outcomes
The program was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from all stakeholders involved. Educators praised the program for its ability to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application, providing students with a tangible understanding of how emerging technologies impact industry. Schools reported increased student engagement, particularly in STEM subjects, and many students expressed newfound interest in advanced manufacturing as a career pathway.

From a government perspective, this initiative is viewed as a key strategy to develop a skilled workforce in Queensland’s regional areas. By inspiring over 1,000 students, the program not only raised awareness of advanced manufacturing but also set the stage for continued collaboration between schools, industry, and government.

Next Steps
The success of this initiative has laid the groundwork for translating these pathways into tangible outcomes. Plans are underway to expand the program to more schools across Queensland, incorporating deeper engagement with industry partners to offer work placements, internships, and mentorship programs. This next phase will help ensure that students have the opportunity to pursue advanced manufacturing careers, backed by the right knowledge, skills, and networks.

This case study showcases the power of collaboration between the Queensland Government, schools, and industry in inspiring future career pathways in advanced manufacturing. By equipping students with crucial skills in AI, quantum computing, and blockchain, we are not only preparing them for the jobs of tomorrow but also fostering innovation that will shape the future of Queensland’s economy.
