Focus
To prepare the next generation of Queensland to be future ready.
The demand for future-ready skills continues to accelerate as industries respond to technological change and economic uncertainty. Programs like this play a critical role in ensuring students are not only aware of emerging opportunities but are equipped with the mindset and capabilities to navigate multiple careers over their lifetime.
In collaboration with Queensland University of Technology (QUT), this workshop offers and unprecedented and forward-thinking methodology to deliver the "Future Workforce" initiative, delivered to prepare young people for the jobs and skills of tomorrow. Designed to help high school students understand how work is changing, the program engaged students in future-focused thinking around emerging industries, transferable skills, and evolving career pathways.
The initiative introduced students to the realities of a rapidly transforming workforce, shaped by automation, digital technologies, sustainability, and global disruption, and supported them to explore how their interests, capabilities, and subject choices connect to future careers. By focusing on both technical and human skills, the program addressed the growing need to equip students with the adaptability required for Queensland’s future economy.
The Challenge
Young people are making subject and career decisions in an environment of unprecedented change. Many students and educators struggle to keep pace with how quickly jobs are evolving, which roles are emerging, and which skills will remain relevant in the long term. In regional and diverse school contexts, access to up-to-date labour market insights and future workforce knowledge can be limited.
Without targeted exposure to future industries and skills, students risk making decisions based on outdated perceptions of work, potentially limiting their career pathways in a highly dynamic economy.
The Solution
The Future Workforce program was designed to bring clarity, confidence, and relevance to career conversations in schools. Through interactive workshops, students explored:
- How jobs are changing due to technology, automation, and global trends
- The rise of new industries and hybrid career pathways
- The importance of transferable skills such as problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and digital literacy
- How education, training, and lifelong learning connect to future employability
The workshops combined real-world examples, industry insights, and practical activities to help students link their learning today with the careers of tomorrow.
